As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, we’re catching up with some of the people behind the scenes who help make Roksan what it is today. First up, our Software Test Manager, Joe Deller.
My grandfather loved recording music, gifting me a reel-to-reel tape recorder when I was eight. I’ve played in bands since my teens and made my own effects pedals and amps. I was in software engineering for quite a while, then jumped at an opportunity to run a recording studio. I worked at an audio interface manufacturer, combining software and audio interests. Roksan was a chance to experience working at the end of the signal chain. I brought a bunch of LPs to my interview, and when I wasn’t shown the door, I knew I was with like-minded people.
There’s no typical working day. I might be soldering component changes, writing code, reviewing requirements, working through a test plan, taking audio measurements, or investigating issues. I work with a lot of different teams, internal and external. I do spend a lot of time listening to music from different sources.
I think all of us have a sense of whether it sounds right and feels right, but we can strongly disagree about what those things are. HiFi is quite a personal thing; it can’t be defined in technical specifications. HiFi should blend with your environment and be honest with the sound. The build quality and attention to detail might not affect the sonic properties of an amplifier, but they speak volumes about the work that went into making it.
Roksan has a long heritage of designers and engineers who have a passion for audio and love using the products they built. You feel that when using and hearing the products. Where many brands are now part of a large corporation, Roksan has kept its feisty independence and sound.
Alec Guinness. Highly accomplished, extremely versatile, quietly professional, courteous and committed, a joy to work with.
